"do we like the same books" should have been understood as "do we both like to spam other people's mailbox"

As net users we also have a responsibility to be more careful of what sites we ourselves join and what invites we send out to friends...although shelfari is nothing more than a cheap spamming site, blaming them alone is not enough...

My question..why send invites in the first place..whether bulk or not..I don't want no body sending me invites...I'll help myself

There are other sites which probably didn't adhere to such tricks as shelfari did, nonetheless I get at least 5-6 such unsolicited invites everyday from various sites.. these are invites my friends, in all their merry, with whole lot of love, consciously chose to send..annoys me like hell.. Xing, WRYN, Yaari.com, tagged and what not..

Josh, if you were serious about not offending new members, you could change the sign up process so that A) clicking the "Send Invite" button only sent invites to the contacts on the part of the page that you could SEE, and B) make the default setting for potential contacts UNchecked, rather than checked.

I really thought you guys had just made a stupid mistake, but after reading this mealy-mouthed and insincere apologia, I'm beginning to think you guys are actually evil.

Thanks for all the feedback.

We in no way designed Shelfari to force people to send invitations to their friends. While we make it convenient, we leave the decision entirely up to our users. There is a clear link to "skip making friends now" on the page where we provide the option of importing your email contacts. Importing email contacts is an optional step.

We ONLY send invitations to the email addresses which are selected when the user clicks on invite friends.

Please send us any suggestions to improve this process. The whole point of Shelfari is to share your books with your friends. For this reason we have made this process easy. At the same time, we really do want our product to be clearly understood.

While a different genre then romance, check out the Harry Potter contest we just launched. We are giving away a signed first edition of the first book in the series.

Happy Reading,

Josh

I keep hearing about this Shelfari thing (mainly people apologizing for anyone they've inadvertently spammed) but I still don't get why people like it so much. Like you said, I can see people's books on their website just fine. Anything that basically invades my computer to get email addresses is not something I'm interested in.

I checked, you do have to sign in with your gmail password and push a button marked INVITE to spam everyone you know. I am mildly surprised how many people did this without realising. But IMHO time for a Shelfari boycott for letting it go on.

I've gotten lots too, but I just deleted them. I have no interest in visiting the site, never mind joining.

Oh, Lord, I hope I didn't screw up when my friend set me up today. I deselected everybody, but I couldn't get past the screen. The only button was "send invites." So I clicked only myself--my gmail backup account. Hopefully I didn't spam anybody!
