Do you comment?
Not on other people’s blogs, but your own.
Earlier this week, Shannon wrote about the lack of people commenting on blogs, which stemmed from a conversation we had and some general whining on my part.
Then, as I was blog surfing this week, I commented on a few blogs (I do comment when a topic strikes me), and of those, there were several looking for feedback about things. But the blog owners never commented back. Not to acknowledge that I’d “helped” them out, or that anyone else had either. In fact, I then realized that these bloggers almost never comment on their own blogs. And I was irritated. I thought “how rude”.
And then I realized. Oh crap. I do that! So I made a promise to myself that I was going to be better about this. I won’t promise to respond to every comment, but to more rather than less (as long as I’m able–you’ll have to excuse my comment absence when I’m traveling). One thing I’ve noticed about my own blog habits–I’m more likely to go back to a blog where the owner interacts in the comments. I think it just seems as if they’re more interested in me as a blog visitor, not just a stat.
So, do you comment?

I do my best to comment to blog posts. I think it is encouraging to bloggers to know Someone is Out Here. lol I almost always comment back to commenters on my blog. Usually if I don’t it’s because they are anonymous. But even then I try. I am more like to forget to reply to an anonymous rather than an Angela.
Annmaries last blog post..I’m Twittering
I have done. Now I did wake up this morning and thought “I need to leave a comment to Angie on my blog thanking her for the Basil advice just in case she goes back to look.” I’ll go over and do that right now
Pennys last blog post..2 conundrums
Heh. Now everyone is going to think I was talking about them when I think it’s unlikely the person/people are even reading my blog!
And just to clarify, I don’t think any blogger should reply to EVERY comment, but I think it’s good for us all to participate in the conversation in our own comments.
Annmarie, I was just telling Jaci the other day that I didn’t know what I did before you came back to blogland. You’re the best commenter ever! You make blogs feel loved
My VRS isn’t compatible with your blog software, Angela, or I’d comment here regularly (on good days I can type with 2 fingers, but it takes a long time if I get long-winded.) Your comment box on my browser is 1/4″ X 1-1/2″, which makes it hard for me to see/read what I’ve written. But unless you have another handicapped visitor, this isn’t likely to be a common problem, and I certainly don’t expect bloggers to change software just because I can’t type.
Lynns last blog post..Winners
Yes, I do comment. Sometimes to several comments, sometimes just once. But I do try to comment on my own blog because it annoys me when people don’t.
And I agree that Annmarie is a great blogger.
Jaci Burtons last blog post..What Happens When It Rains Here
Yeah. I do. but it took me a long time. Once I started commenting back on a regular bases, my comments started to increase. Sometimes I’m too busy and can’t comeback to comment, but overall, I make an effort to comment back at least once.
Mel-O-Dramas last blog post..how excited am i about this??
I used to have a very strict reply-to-every-comment policy on my blog. I still try to but don’t always succeed, but in general, you’re far more likely to get an answer from me than not to. Oh, and I always reply to new commenters even if I’m not replying to everyone else.
I do and I don’t. If I’ve got something to say, I do. I’m also likely to go to your blog to say it (sometimes I just say, “Hey, I left an answer at my blog”) because let’s face it. Not everyone has the time to sit on your comments and wait for an answer.I do have to admit that I’m a bit turned off by the people who comment on every single entry in a separate post, so that you’ll see a post has 20 comments — but 10 of those are the blog owner. That’s entirely a personal thing on my end. Some people prefer that.
Susan Helene Gottfrieds last blog post..Susan’s Inside Writing: Old Friends
I do comment on my own post, it’s not always an immediate reply though. I also try to go back to blogs where I’ve posted a comment to see if the blog owner has posted a reply. I also like it when the commenters start up a conversation. :chair:
Anns last blog post..
I comment on my own blog quite a bit… and when I don’t, it’s only because I wonder if anyone actually goes BACK to my comments to see if I did, kwim?? I know that I don’t always follow-through when I comment on someone’s blog, to see if THEY responded… I guess I just assume they won’t b/c, like you said, Angie, most bloggers don’t!
I generally reply to commenters on my blog. Otherwise, it’s if I have an opinion, and I usually do.
Mays last blog post..Audiobooks versus Ebooks
Well, i only have a Livejournal that is mostly read by my family and a few friends, but i always reply to comments they leave ;;) I think it’s only polite to acknowledge them, and mostly i have something to say back.
See now, testing my patience already. I wrote a long comment responding and it disappeared into the black hole of the internet. Of course!
Anyway, Lynn, I have to admit with some shame that I never considered how this worked, I always assumed the comment box looked the same to everyone and worked for everyone. I’d be happy to make adjustments, but I don’t know how. If you have any tips, you can email me angie@samhainpublishing.com
My goal is not to reply to every comment, but to reply in general. I can’t possibly reply to every one, because I have a hard enough time keeping up with emails!
Susan and Erin–that’s part of the reason I love the subscribe to comments feature. So people don’t have to remember to check back. I often comment and forget, so I love being able to follow the conversation via emails so I can go back and respond. Otherwise I’d spend all day checking blogs.
Susan, I don’t care for the individual responses in seperate comments either.
Also, in the course of thinking of this, I think there are some blogs that function more as forums almost, and the conversation becomes so that that the blog owner can’t always keep up with it, and certainly not with the majority of comments. I think, in those cases, it’s just not reasonable. But most that I know of, the blog owners still do a great job of participating in the conversation.
I admit that I’m really bad about doing so, though I do try!
I comment on my own blog–so much I think I’m talking to myself most of the time. LOL
I try to respond. Sometimes it’s a few days later but I want to have an interactive tarot blog so I make the effort. I do tend to respond to several people at a time though. That helps.
TarotByArwens last blog post..When Death Comes Calling, How Do You Answer?
I try to comment if the blog has caught my interest enough to read. I’m linked to 80+ blogs. Too many to hit realistically every day. As for my own. I sometimes feel funny just “Whoohooo”ing a comment but if it’s a legitimate question or statement, I’ll answer. I do think that has a lot to do with a successful blog, interaction.
Yes, I do comment on my own blog. Blogger send me an email when someone comments so that makes it easy to keep track of what I need to reply to.
I don’t get many visitors anymore, but I guess I wasn’t very good at commenting on my own comments. If someone asked me something then I tried to, but sometimes I’m not sure I really have any more to say. I’m not posting just for the traffic, but I’d sure like to have some. LOL Maybe if I commented back, people would keep coming back? I don’t know.
Michelle (MG)s last blog post..Vampires and My Reality
Hey MG, maybe your stats aren’t going down, but more people are using a blog feed to read from?
And lol @ Michelle. Some days I feel like I’m talking to myself too, but just in general posting.
That’s another thing I’ve commented on to friends: sometimes the posts I think might get comments, don’t, and then very random posts get a lot of comments.
I like this post. There are people commenting here that haven’t before. Hi lurkers!
Excellent post if you’re fishing for comments
I do try to respond to comments on my blog, because I know how I appreciate it when people acknowledge my comments on their blogs. But I know I’m not 100% at it.
Some comments don’t really need a response from me. If I post that it’s cold and you post “Brrrrr” then you’re agreeing with me. What can I say that won’t sound redundant after that?
H-Gals last blog post.."Pause my show!"
Excellent post if you’re fishing for comments
It would have been even better if I posted whining about how no one comments on MY blog anymore
I’m crap at responding to comments on my own blog.
I’m crap at responding to comments on my own blog.
That made me laugh because I’m pretty sure, on your blog, Karen, people don’t care.
And clearly I need to fix these comments, the formatting isn’t working. Bleh.
I’ve tried to respond but not hard enough. It’s a great reminder and I’ll now try harder

Maura Andersons last blog post..Friday Flash – Up in Flames Part 2 (m/m & adult)
I always respond to people who post on my blog. I want to show them that their comments were not only acknowledged but appreciated.
I don’t comment a lot on blogs unless the subject interests me. But I have stopped visiting some blogs if the author never responds or if there are a gazillion comments that it’s obvious it’s just some place for people to talk among themselves.
Marias last blog post..The Saga Continues
:smoking: I am more likely to respond to comments if I am guest blogging.
cmr :smoking:
I try to comment back if I have something to say and a lot of times I just reply via email. So many readers don’t ever come back I don’t think….they never seem to answer any follow up questions. So if possible I respond via email or otherwise in comments.
Amys last blog post..Sunday Salon
I usually only comment on other people’s posts when I have something to say. When I’m in a good mood and chatty, that’s when I usually comment. If I’m in a shoddy mood and my brain’s not working too well, I remain silent.I usually reply to comments only when I have something to say in return. (See above.)Oh, and I won’t be attending RWAustralia’s conference this August because of costs (I only wanted to pay for one workshop – not a whole day), but if a group of you all are going out for a coffee or something in Melbourne, count me in
Enjoy Melbourne, and have a lovely day!

I used to reply to every comment on my blog, but I’ve been slack lately. If it’s a long comment, I’ll reply, but if it’s a couple of sentences, I might not, depending on what we’re talking about. If it’s a commenter I don’t recognise, I usually check out their blog and comment there if I can find something to say. There are also some blogs where I hesitate to comment because I’m scared of how the blogger might reply.
Kats last blog post..Guess who’s in town?
I do comment back. It’s a conversation.
Charlene Teglias last blog post..The book currently known as Wolf’s Touch
I comment back on my own blog, but I think that’s because Livejournal makes it so much easier to do that, especially since it lets the original commenter know that they have a response. Unless there’s a good discussion in the comment section or I’ve asked a question I’m hoping will get answered, I rarely revisit a blog post to look at comments made after mine.
I used to comment often at my own blog, but then I started wondering how those original commenters would know I’d replied to their comment unless they came back? My blog isn’t high-traffic, and I’ve certainly tried to watch what I say now that I’m an editor.
That’s why I like my LiveJournal blog (of course, it’s friends only). I know when someone has commented and they know when I’ve responded to them.
Sometimes. It depends on what the comment was and who made it.
I do try and comment back to most of the comments on my blog. Even if it’s with just a short thank you. Otherwise I feel like I’m being rude. I’m nowhere near perfect though and often think no one sees it because how many really look back?
Kwanas last blog post..Summer Monday
I had no idea this topic would draw so much interest! Or that there were so many bloggers who were so much better than me at returning comments. Okay, actually most everybody is better than me (except the ones I was complaining about, lol).
I do have to say, I really like LiveJournal’s set up in that way, that the person being responded to always knows, though there are other things about LJ I don’t love as much.
I respond to all comments when I put up a new post. I feel that if someone takes the time to comment on my blog, it behooves me to respond. Otherwise, I’d just turn off comments. I don’t bother commenting on blogs that don’t respond unless it’s something I just have to say. I think it’s all part of having a blog. Unless I get hundreds of comments and it becomes unfeasible, I respond. But I came here to ask you if something’s wrong with Samhain/MBAM or if there’s a new policy? I wanted to buy a book before the day ended so I could still get last week’s new release discount but the site keeps asking me for a username and password. My MBAM username and password doesn’t work. Just a heads up if you don’t know about this. And if you do, a complaint b/c if I can’t browse or access MBAM, how can I buy? Thanks!

I don’t always comment back to responses left on my blog. Questions, yes, I try to answer all of them. Or if a comment makes me think, strikes me as funny, that sort of thing, I comment. But each one? No. It can get too time-consuming and responding to each one just doesn’t strike me as the best use of my time when I could be working on a book….
or procrastinating about it.
Shiloh Walkers last blog post..Guest bloggers…???
I never said anything about responding to each comment. In fact, I flat out said I wouldn’t be doing that. But I think there’s a difference between only answering a question, and participating on your own blog.
