Celebrating the old and the new. A contest!

Four years ago, I joined a new, not-yet-heard of publishing company called Samhain as its very first editor. I later became executive editor and enjoyed watching as it grew, as readers and authors discovered the company and in turn helped it grow. Over the course of those four years, Samhain has released just over 1000 titles. I edited nearly 250 of those. Almost one-fourth of the books in the backlist are titles I had some hand in shaping, and though I’ve moved on to Carina Press, I’m still proud of the company, the authors and the books.

Today marks the day the last book I edited for Samhain releases, Night is Darkest by Jayne Rylon. In order to celebrate my last four years with Samhain and its authors, and celebrate my new adventure at Carina Press, I’m offering a contest!

HarlequinToteOne winner will receive a prize package consisting of a number of fun things including print books, Think Fresh, Think Digital mints from our rogue digital session at RWA this past summer, a black notebook portfolio with Samhain logo on front (I gave these to Samhain staff and editors last year for Christmas. I still use mine!), a Samhain mug and some other Samhain goodies. And, not only that, but the prize winner will get one of these most awesome Harlequin vintage bags. Seriously? The bags rock because they’re fun and HUGE. So the grand prize winner will get all of that plus whatever else I dig out of my giveaway bin (and there’s a ton of stuff in there).

I’ll also send a small package to 3 other winners that contains mints, the portfoloio and some random odds and ends that don’t suck.

To enter, all you need to do is a leave a comment on this post telling me what you love about digital publishing. The contest is open internationally, to readers and authors alike, and I’ll draw a prize winner on Monday December 7th.

I have been in love with digital books for nearly a decade. It makes the books available to a broader audience, appeals to a wide spectrum of ages, is ecologically better for the planet, and carrying a hundred books on an e-reader is a heck of a lot easier than carrying them by hand. Though I will always love the feel of a paper book in my hand, e-books are a satisfying addition to my love of books.

I’m still a newbie to the whole e-publishing shebang, but what makes it so interesting to me is expanded opportunity, both for writers and readers.

I love that I can find books in digital publishing that push boundaries. And I love that when I have insomnia and need something to read at 3am, I can grab my computer, pop on to a site and download 2 or 3 books.

I think digital publishing is wonderful. For several reasons, but above all, I think it’s great because they offer something to authors that traditional publishers don’t. A place for different voices. Traditional publishing can be cut and dry at times. Digital publishing also offers customers a wide range of books in a condensed format. You can buy a book in moments from the comfort of our homes.

I am so happy you are heading up Carina Press. Thanks for all your hard work with Samhain and your vision with this new project. You’re one cool girlie!

I love digital books becuase it means I can travel and commute with one slim little eReader instead of a huge bag of books. The last time we went overseas for two weeks I took 10 books – and had to pay extra weight charges! That was before my super awesome Sony Reader.

My book choices have expanded – now I don’t have to worry about the covers of my books when visiting the in-laws.

Oh! My favorite is that my reader hides all my book buying sins. There’s not evidence of books around the house for the hubby to know how many I’ve bought! I’m like a book buying ninja with digital!

I still remember my first ebook – Sarah McCarty’s Mac’s Law. My Secret Santa recipient requested that book and I remember emailing Sarah and asking her permission to print it out to give as a gift. She was so nice!

That book opened up the vast variety of books available. I had never read an erotic romance before- didn’t even know they existed.

I love the diversity, the ease of reading, and the ability to get a book any time of the day or night.

Ah, the immediate gratification! No waiting for shipping, no disappointment if it isn’t in stores…. plus the extra shelf space that is freed up!

The wonderful thing about digital publishing is how open and friendly they are to brand new authors. They’re willing to give those newbies a chance, yes with a top notch story and writing skills. It’s a wonderful step and notch for newbies to come in, open their wings, and give writing and publishing a try. A learning experience.

With digital publishing, I believe there’s a better turn around from WIP to actual pdf/digital file ready for sale. The reader is able to buy, download, and have an immediate satisfaction with reading the story right there and then instead of waiting for it to be shipped, or go to a store, wait in line, drive home, and then crack it open. Digital books can be read everywhere, anywhere, anytime with the right little device. Something I’m looking into getting for myself. :) Not that I will ever give up the actual paper books. There’s still something special about opening a brand new book the first time, hearing that gentle crack of the spine, and the weight against your fingers.

Still, I love the opportunities of digital publishing and hope to venture further into all these wonderful groups/publishers.

When I discovered e-books about six years ago, it changed my life. Not only did I discover an entire new world of reading, but I also finally found my place in life. Three years ago, I sold my first book to an e-publisher. In the intervening time, I’ve met a wonderful host of friends, readers, and fellow writers.

As an aside, one aspect of digital publishing not mentioned very often it the ability for those of us who are aging to format the books in a font size large enough for us to read! As the population ages, I suspect this will be an ever more important feature of digital publishing!

I love digital for many reasons! I can read anywhere, no need to hide my covers or my books from a very interested 10 year old daughter. :) I can buy more books than I would have been able to afford in paper. I can store them on my traveldrive instead of taking up shelf space in my tiny bungalow. Buying difital is like buying green – no paper! And, best of all, I can get to know far more authors.

Many authors have had their dreams achieved to be published by applying themselves to the larger opportunities of digital presses. I love EC, and Samhain, and now eRedSage – who happens to be my very first publisher! :) Now my book will be downloadable too, saving forests and bringing a blush to readers (who also happen to be hiding their covers, LOL). Digital is great!

Ooh, I love this contest! :) What I love about digital publishing is that it’s revitalizing the whole publishing industry and making what the reader wants a more important part of the equation. There are so many different ways to get books to readers now that the “traditional” print method is no longer automatic–it’s simply one possibility in a myriad of others.

I’m laughing because I agree with everyone above! Especially with “my e-reader hides my book buying sins” — I can buy as many books as I want in whatever genre and they are all in one cute slim Kindle. I can take 280+ books with me on a three week trip to China (that was just a little overkill) in one little 7 oz. package. (What if I ran out of things to read? eek!)
I can try new genres and new authors for a low price. I can get my favorite hardcover bestsellers the very second they are released. I can read my much-loved smutty m/m novels anywhere without disguising the cover. I can make the font size big when my eyes are tired. And the best is that no trees are killed to make my books and no storage space is taken up after I’ve read them!

I love the instant gratification of buying an ebook and reading it right away, without having to get out of bed if I’m lazy. (Also, I love the ease of buying from MBaM.) I love that there’s such a wide variety of ebooks out there, and that many of them blow my mind. I love that digital publishing brought to me Deidre Knight’s BUTTERFLY TATTOO. The list goes on and on.

I love that I can cart a dozen books with me on a trip, and all of them fit in tiny little hipster purse on a reader. With room to spare for pom chapstick and a camera.

I love digital publishing for that it takes chances. There are books I’ve read that never would have been published in New York. Deidre Knight’s Butterfly Tattoo being a great example. There are so many wonderful stories that NY simply won’t take the chance on because it’s too risky. Digital publishing gives them a home, and I love it for that — both as a writer and a reader. :)

The thing I like most about digital books is the fact that you can have them NOW! You don’t have to make a trip to the store. You don’t have to hang around your mailbox waiting for a book. Many a time I ordered a book from MB&M, Ellora’s Cave, Liquid Silver or Loose Id in the middle of the night. It sure helped the insomnia.

Hi, Angie! There are definitely many things to love about digital publishing–easy, fast (immediate!) access to a wide range of stories and authors, portability, space savings, tree savings… And yes, I can carry a bigger portion of my TBR with me in a tiny fraction of the space! What’s not to love? ;)

Portability

1) I can carry around hundreds of books around with me all at once.

2) When we move? Hard drive vs. 100’s of boxes!

That is a pretty major milestone! Congrats!!

What I love about digital publishing? There’s only so many books I can store in one flat (I’ve around 400 lbs of books in my flat right now–I left many boxes at my parents’ when I first moved out of the family home). Not an issue with digital books!

I love the immediacy of digital publishing both as being available the minute you see it in a “store” and also the quicker turnaround for the author to get works out. I like the lower price and smaller storage facilities needed. I also like that epublishers and e-authors can take more chances with content.

I’ve been in love with digital publishing since I discovered ebooks (my first is an EC book by Lora Leigh) for a number of reasons:

1. Instant gratification. I saw it, want it, must have it NOW, got it!

2. Convenience. Especially when I’m lazy to go out.

3. Unlimited shelf space. Well, limited only by my hard disk space. But then, I can always buy more storage devices.

4. I can do my part in saving trees. (I do what I can for Mother Earth in small ways like this.)

I don’t even want to count the number of ebooks I already own. When publishers or Fictionwise offer discounts, I go crazy shopping. My wallet hates me.

I agree with so many here about digital publishing. But I think what I love most is that digital publishing has charged the pathway for all of the new and various types of romance. Honestly, without digital publishing and the risks that so many digital presses took, we might not have urban fantasy, paranormal, romantica, and so many of the other romance genre’s that now have such cult followings. Digital publishers took risks that many of the print publishers wouldn’t. I also love that there are so many more authors to choose from now. Those who couldn’t get in the door at the big names, honed their craft in digital, and so many of them have become successful mainstream authors. My world of authors has expanded exponentially because of digital.

Geez, there’s so many things I love about digital pubs! The diversity of stories/novellas/novels; the ability to buy purchase, download, and start reading a book just minutes after realizing I can’t live w/o reading it; having so many great reads in one itty, bitty little reader; the gorgeous covers; and budget friendly prices – although my out-of-control wishlist make purchasing everything I want to read just a wee bit unrealistic… :)

I just tried reading e-books and I found to my surprise I love it. My reader program works on my palm so instead of a book, that not always fit into my purse, I just open my pda and read anytime and anywhere. Never thought I’d say this, but digital books are great!

I love the people.

I’m still waiting to get an ereader so my e-pub purchases have been miniscule compared to my paperback buying. But the community of authors, editors and readers that digital publishing has created makes me eager to be a part as a reader and hopeful author.

I’m hoping Santa is leaving me an ereader for a present. If not, Uncle Sam will be paying for it with the tax refund check.

I love the way that digital publishing has opened up publishing in general, and romance publishing in particular. It feels much less like an exclusive aristocracy and much more like democracy — diversity, minority viewpoints, opportunity for cross-genre experiments, and the prospect of a profitable venture that isn’t based on the blockbuster best-seller model.

I was a reluctant digital reader at first, being a die-hard paper books fan. But some authors that I really wanted to read were only (or mostly only) available in digital. So I broke down and bought an ereader for Christmas 2002 and fell in love. Over the past 7 years I’ve gone through several variations of ereaders from the Rocket ebook to the Sony ereader (first version). I love being able to read anytime, anywhere and I love having multiple choices of what to read. I change what I’m reading based on my mood. With my ereader I can literally carry hundreds of books for any mood. Without digital publishing I would not have so many choices available. So hurray for the epublishers out there who brought me into the digital era.

I’m coming at this from an author’s perspective. Digital publishing opened a whole new world for me. I was lucky enough to be one of the debut authors at Samhain and it was a turning point in my writing. I love the fact I can submit a story and have it released a few months later instead of waiting maybe 18 months or so for a print release. The instant gratification from publishing digitally is terrific. It does a lot to boost an author’s confidence in her writing.

From a reader’s perspective, I love that I can go on-line and instantly download the book I want. I love that I can carry books with me without having to break my back with a weighted tote bag. The price point of most digital books far outweighs the price of a lot of print books. And yeah, I don’t have to admit to hubby how much I’m spending on books. lol He can’t see the evidence cluttering up my bookshelves.

I adore digital publishing for the sheer accessibility of it. For the longest time, I was frustrated that my local bookstores were not carrying a good enough selection of erotic romances and other sub-genres of romances. Once I discovered e-books, there was no going back for me. I love that e-publishing has lead to more talented authors being discovered, there is a fair chance of a wonderful author to potentially approach digital publishers and have a positive outcome.

I also love the portability and storage factor of it, I can store thousands of e-books on my macbook and not have to worry about running out of space. I can’t say the same about my print books, despite donating and selling over 400 books in the last couple of years, I still have several bookshelves & treasure box like storage chests full of books not to mention piles on every available surface.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my print books and will continue to buy the odd book here & there but I would prefer that publishers turn to POD more and promote e-books a lot more.

I wish you the best of luck with your new venture with Carina Press.

Happy Thanksgiving!

A lot of the authors that I am auto-buy for today are authors that first amazed me in book that I didn’t read on paper, and I am thankful that I’m living in a time when books and publishing are growing in such fascinating ways.

I really like a lot of things about digital publishing – diversity, innovation, mobility, space-saving, but the thing I think I love the most is the accessibility and immediate gratification. When I finish a book a 10 pm and need something new to read, I don’t have to leave my comfy chair, find a store that is still open, trek outside in the cold, and maybe have to wait until the next day anyway. I just grab my computer and a few clicks later I can continue reading.

I also really think that digital is the future of reading, not to the complete exclusion of print, but as a definite majority of the market. It just makes so much sense. And I like being in on the future.

Being environmentally friendly and not mowing down miles of forests for the book of the month club’s latest is also a great benefit too.

There’s the ease of acquisition, the opportunities for even more authors to find publishing homes… for me, digital will never replace print, but I’m coming to appreciate more and more how it complements print books. It seems that digital books are encouraging some reluctant readers to read more than they would have before… that’s fantastic!

It must be exhilarating to see the impact you’ve had on so many writers and readers! I didn’t even know about Samhain until I saw your reply to someone I was following on Twitter, and was amazed at what I saw. I am looking forward to seeing what amazing things will happen at Carina Press.

I like digital publishing because of the instant gratification. You order a book and you can read it immediately.

I really like digital publishing for a few reasons. Firstly, I’m impatient and when I want to read a certain book, I want it NOW. :) Secondly, I can read in bed with the overhead lights off using the backlight and switch my ebook reader off the minute I get too tired to read anymore and don’t have to get back up to turn the lights off. Thirdly, it seems easier on my eyes and allows me to read longer without eyestrain.
Great contest, thanks for the opportunity.

I love the selection of erotic romance stories that are available in electronic format. I’ve discovered so many new authors that only publish ebooks, and now that I’ve picked up an Ebookwise Reader, I have instant access to my favorite books 24/7. Love the convenience of ebooks, that I can carry around 100 available titles where ever I go, and that I can buy books instantly, and not have to wait for a delivery or a trip to the local bookstore.

Love the instant gratification. (Ahem.) And the lesser use of fossil fuels to bring me hours of reading pleasure. The sometimes racier content as well as covers. And although I too agree that digital never can nor should completely replace print books, I’m a huge advocate of the technological age. If some people who perhaps would not have picked up a book otherwise might read because they are so digitally focused (esp. kids), more power to e-books!

What do I like about digital publishing?

Hmm, lets see. I love the portability. Before I got a dedicated reader for all my e-books, I took my laptop everywhere. So I had access to all my e-books all the time. On campus, in between lectures. On the train and the bus. At home.

I love that you can adjust the size of the text with digital content. My mum had trouble reading the text on paperbacks. She would always try to buy the large print books. Unfortunately not all books have a large print version. So she would make do with hardbacks.

It’s digital! So you can take as many as you want when you go on vacation!

You can download the book as soon as you buy it! You don’t have to wait for it to show up in the mail.

I love digital publishing both as a reader and as a(n unpublished as of yet in the digital sector) writer for the same reasons – it being accessible to people all over the world. I can buy books written by my US friends without having to wait for rights to be bought over here or paying incredible amounts for shipping (I’m in Australia), and the same goes for friends who might want to buy my books.

Not to mention the beauty of digital publishers being more likely to take a chance on new names, sending a ray of sunshiny hope into aspiring writers’ lives.

Thank you so much for making this contest international. :)

I love digital publishing because of instant gratification and the ease of accessing ebooks. I love the variety of ebooks that you can find. I have discovered so many new-to-me authors by reading ebooks.

Instant gratification! And being able to bring multiple books on a trip without having to lug a big bag (though that may not be a terrible thing if I had the cool Harlequin bag…ha!)

24×7 availability, no problem finding a parking space after driving through traffic for half an hour in the middle of the holiday rush when I need something to read. I love the instant gratification, and later when I finish the book I love that I don’t have to find another place to cram a book that I have to worry about getting rid of.

There’s no smog in digital, no slushy wet feet. An infiinite variety of titles, authors, genres, and subjects. I love that it’s giving opportunities to people who might otherwise have waited years for publication.

I love the competitive nature of digital publishing. After 20 years working in commercial software development I think it’s a beautiful thing for companies to compete for the consumer.

I love the prices of digital books, Yea! I can afford to read more!

I love how technology is coming out with ereaders that make reading an ebook like print. And I also adore the instant gratification. With ebooks you don’t have to drive to a store and fight with parking and customers or deal with a book being sold out. Nor do you have to wait for an order to be shipped and pay the darn shipping and handling fees that are so out of control.

I love that there is no clutter with digital publishing. Don’t get me wrong, I love my bookshelves, but I could only keep so many before digital publishing. Plus, the ‘find’ function and bookmarks make it easy to reread my favorite scenes.

I love digital publishing for several reasons: instant gratification (you want a book, buy it, start reading within minutes. find an author you like, you are able to read their previous publications. The cost is less. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, the best thing about digital reading is that you can take it anywhere and no one has to know you are reading erotica! (well, as long as your not drooling or breathing heavy! HaHa)

My favorite thing about digital publishing is the fact that I can bring over 300 books with me in my carry on bag when I travel. I love the fact that ebooks save physical space. That I can save some money when I buy digital. That I can buy them whenever and whereever (notwithstanding publisher restrictions) I want. That ebooks save trees.

I think digital publishing is fantastic, I love that as a reader I have options.

I love the diversity of the stories, the quickness of selection and delivery, DRM-Freeness +++ and so many wonderful authors. It also doesn’t hurt that I love my e-reader (sangria PRS-505 its so cute!)

Thanks for all the books Angela – I can’t wait for the Carina to open their doors.

As a rhetoric scholar, I like digitial publishing because, even though it somewhat parallels the literacy shift that followed the invention of the printing press, it’s not similar enough to be studied using the same theoretical tools we use to study conventionally produced texts. In other words, it’s both a process of production that is radically different AND it creates a set of literacy practices that are radically different.

As a reader, I like to buy books online. It means I don’t have to drag 6-10 books with me on every trip I take (I read about a book a day) AND if I read a new author and like her, I can download more of her books immediately! I read a much wider array of authors now than I ever did before, all because of digital publishing.

As a writer, I like digital publishing because it expands the diversity of books that can get published. What might not be seen as a big enough seller to hit a print publisher can still be in high demand as a digital pub.

Oh my, there’s a ton I love about digital publishing! I love that I can find new and exciting writers. I love the wide selection of erotica. (I lOVE that I no longer have to hide the covers of some of my books, lol.) I love being able to carry around hundreds of books on one teeny, tiny memory card. I love not running out of things to read while waiting at the doctor’s office for the appointment that was supposed to start 40 minutes ago!

I don’t care about the type of medium I just plain love books.

It’s hard to find something that someone else hasn’t already said. So I think I’ll just repeat a few things.

What do I like about digital publishing?

1. The new to me authors I find
2. The fact that I”m saving a tree or three
3. No more waiting for the darn mail to get here with the print copy, and it being at least a wweek or so past the release date even though I pre-ordered MONTHS ago!
4. Being able to read at night without turning the lights on and everyone wondering what’s wrong.

That’s just a few things about what I love about digital publishing.

I first became interested in digital publishing when I realized how many awesome books were in the public domain (and therefore available for download–Jane Austen, anyone?). Then I realized there were a lot of talented authors pushing the envelope, like rogue writers and publishers. I love the idea of readers taking back control of what they choose to read and, so, what will be published.

» Meghan said: { Dec 5, 2009 - 10:12:20 }

I’m still fairly new to digital publishing, but I can’t believe it took me so long to find it. I love all the options I have with it – any kind of book I want to read? Somebody somewhere is writing it, and digital publishing has a level of access to it that allows it to be published.

I also love the fact that my books are all in one place (although I will admit that it hasn’t really prevented any “accidents” with the credit card at BN…) I love the level of affordability too! I definitely buy more since they’re cheaper!

» Fae Sutherland said: { Dec 6, 2009 - 11:12:30 }

I love digital publishing because it gives a voice to stories that otherwise would never get told. Not just individual books that push the envelope, but entire genres that have no place at any other table. Genres that find doors slammed in their faces in the mainstream world, epublishing instead opens its doors wide and lets them flourish.

Without digital publishing I wouldn’t have a career because mine is one of those genres. So yeah, I love digital publishing because without it my dream would still be just that – a dream.

I love reading erotic romance, and with digital publishing I get instant access to so many great stories and new authors. I buy new ebooks weekly and load them on my Ebookwise Reader. The Reader is with me whenever I leave the house, and I totally love the convenience of bringing 100 books with me, and picking whichever story suits my mood. My hubby loves digital publishing too, since we have long since run out of room in my office for anymore bookshelves, lol.

I love the fact that the stories authors and their publishing houses put so much time into are so readily available. It saves me a trip out to town, etc. and sometimes it’s just so nice to sit at my computer and say ‘you know what, i want to read a good book while my kid’s at school and i have a free day’.

Thanks so much for doing this contest and congrats to the winner. I liked reading the comments. :)

I like the idea of having many books available on a ereader without the weight of lugging around paper books. I like to have selection to take with me and if one book isn’t working for me at that particular time I can easily have a few to choose from.
