More Articles from Archive ~ Editing

I am so fortunate. Today I said on Twitter and Facebook,  “Do you have a burning question for an editor? I need a blog topic.” I got a tremendous response of some really great, amazing questions. Not all of them about editing, either! So I’m going to be using my blog, and the Carina Press [...]

Last week agent Rachelle Gardner had a guest post from one of her authors. The post is a great one, about what happens when you receive edits–after your book has been contracted. You should read it, it has wonderful things to say. But in the course of the post I read this: The story had [...]

On Twitter this weekend, Viv (@VivWestlake) asked me: Curious @ your opinion: When contest responses are polarized, how does writer know what to change/edit? 2 judges love & 2 hate. There’s no simple answer to this so I didn’t try to respond on Twitter. The truth is, contests can be an excellent source of feedback [...]

I just realized I was remiss in not posting this here (as I’ve been remiss in not posting here at all, which has really been nagging at me). Starting Monday I’ll be hosting a self-editing workshop on the ESPAN RWA forum. It’s not too late to sign up and the sign up cost is extremely [...]

Two weeks ago I advertised I was doing Golden Heart critiques for a fee. The response was somewhat overwhelming (and flattering) and I had a number of aspiring authors contract with me for Golden Heart critiques. But I also had someone, who wishes to remain anonymous, who felt the fee for the critique might have [...]

Last week I came across this blog post from aspiring author Mercedes M. Yardley. In it, she describes her experience of “pitching” to me and makes me sound pretty nifty. Much more nifty than I actually believe I am. Actually, it’s a great firsthand experience of pitching and learning, so you should read it. Anyway, [...]

I posted this on Romance Divas last week, and I thought I should maybe share it here, too. In what appears to be a short time left before I end my period of being unemployed, I wanted to do some freelance editing and critiquing. While I am willing to do full length manuscripts and/or novellas [...]

There’s something that every editor and agent wished authors knew about listing contest wins in a query letter/for a manuscript; they’re not going to necessarily make the manuscript more appealing to us, more marketable and often contest credits won’t make us take a closer look. Probably some of you are reading this and are fairly [...]

As many of you know by now, the legendary Kate Duffy passed away this weekend. For those of you who read my blog but don’t follow publishing, I hope you’ll take a few moments to read about Kate. Her obituary is here, and if you have even a casual acquaintance with romance, you’ll recognize many [...]

Since I’m no longer with Samhain, I’ve deleted this call. If you want to submit an angel or demon story to me, I’d love to see them, any length, any heat level. It broke my heart to leave this anthology behind. You can send them to me at Quartet Press: submissions@quartetpress.com

About Me

Angela James

There is nothing worse than writing a bio. And writing one for your blog sidebar? Blech. Maybe you landed here via Google, followed me from Twitter (does that make you a stalker?) or maybe we met at a conference or you clicked a link from a comment I made at a blog you visited. Hopefully whatever I said didn't make you so mad you came looking for a picture to throw darts at (yep, that's me up above, in my favorite cowboy hat) but instead drove you to find out more about the amazingly witty and intelligent person behind the amazingly witty and intelligent comment.

However you found me, who you found is Angela James, executive editor of Carina Press, Harlequin's new digital-first press. I'm passionate about digital publishing, my mission is to drag people to the digital dark side, one reader (and author) at a time. I'm also Brianna's mommy. At my blog you'll get an odd mix of personal and professional posts about parenting, publishing, books, cooking, sewing and life in general. Come back often, comment frequently and go green—buy ebooks!

Please note that this is my personal blog and my opinions are neither that of Harlequin, nor representative of their opinions.

Find Me Here

First, I blog once or twice a week at theCarina Press blog, talking about the job, the authors, the books and other things Carina Press. And, of course, you can always find me on Twitter. Or Facebook, if you prefer (mostly the same content, one feeds the other). I also run the Carina Press Twitter and Facebook accounts. Social media, it's where it's at (well, it's where I'm at, anyway).
