I realized this weekend that Josh and I are incredible creatures of habit. In regards to the internet that is. With my parents visiting, our time was taken up with entertaining them and showing them the sites in the area. We spent long hours away from the house…and away from the computer. I think I experienced actual withdrawal symptoms.
Normally, when we come home, the first thing one or the other of us does is walk to the computer to check our email. Most people check their answering machines but we don’t have a home phone so we don’t have to worry about that. Nope. We check our email, to see who’s contacted us and what interesting debates are happening on the sites we frequent.
This weekend, we couldn’t do that. It would have been unspeakably rude to sit down in front of the computer and get engrossed in emails and then latest sex topics on the lists 😉 So we both went without until my parents left around 9:30pm each night. I’d see Josh walk by the computer and his eyes would dart to it. Then away. And then back again. He’d swerve slightly towards it and then veer away. I was no better. I would sit in the recliner in the living room, back to the computer, and I swear I could feel the computer like it was a physical being, pulling me towards it. I had to resist the urge to get up, saunter over, and just check to see what came in. Not really read anything. Just check.
As soon as my parents left each night it was a race to see who could reach the computer first. Blood may have been shed. We are a household addicted to the computer and the contact with the world at large that it provides to us.
