Over on Writeminded the other day, Samhain editor Jessica Bimberg asked readers what makes them pick up a book. Lots of mentions of cover art catching their eye (blurb and word of mouth also). In the comments, I threw out the question wondering if cover art will keep someone from buying the book. I didn’t get a lot of responses, so I’m asking again here. Will cover art kill the deal and make you “walk away from” a book? Or do you hold to the old adage of not judging a book by its cover? We talk about this “behind the scenes” occasionally, wondering if a book’s cover will help sell it, or if the cover will not aid sales because it’s unappealing, so I’m curious to hear how cover art affects you.
