When was the last time you found yourself standing in introspection, thinking to yourself about your long blonde hair and smooth tan skin? Yeah, probably not recently. And neither should your characters be thinking of themselves in these terms in their narration. Having them looking in a mirror is a little cliche, but okay, I suppose you can get away with it sometimes. But most often, character description is going to come from other characters. And really, it’s okay with me if you only tell us the hero’s eyes are blue once. I don’t care to know about his blue eyes over. And over. And over again. (Ask my authors who have gotten comments such as “Arrrrgh, I get it already, his eyes are freaking blue as the sea. Can we move on now?” lolol) Don’t go overboard on the character description. Sometimes, less really is more.
